Town of Vienna Names New Police Chief
Vienna’s next police chief will be a familiar face in the Town of Vienna. After conducting a nationwide search that yielded final candidates from New York City, Virginia Beach, Texas, the State of Washington and the Town of Vienna, the current Deputy Chief, Dan Janickey, emerged as the most qualified candidate to serve as Vienna’s next police chief.
“All of the five candidates we interviewed were supremely qualified to serve as chief,” said Town Manager Mercury Payton. “The vetting process was robust, and Dan’s 35 years of multifaceted law enforcement experience in Northern Virginia and his existing relationships with local, state and federal public safety agencies and regional coalitions make him the ideal candidate to serve as Vienna’s next police chief.”
Janickey has served as Vienna’s Deputy Police Chief since 2014. In that role, he has been responsible for directing and managing the day-to-day functions of the Vienna Police Department. He has also been at the forefront of managing community policing initiatives, and he has been involved with the implementation of new technologies to bring the department’s resources up to modern-day standards.
Prior to working with Vienna, Janickey served with the Fairfax County Police Department from 1989 through 2013. Some of his roles included McLean Commander, SWAT Commander, Hostage Negotiator and Internal Affairs assignments, among other responsibilities. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy’s international executive leadership program held in Quantico, VA. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Bluefield University in Virginia, a master’s degree in public administration from Liberty University in Virginia, and a certificate in executive leadership from American University in Washington, D.C.
Janickey’s term will begin Feb. 1, 2026, after current Police Chief Jim Morris retires.
